If suffering is measured by its pain, and love is the degree it is endured, then the greater the suffering, the purer the love. These words from St. Faustina Kowalska of Poland, describe the intent and motivation of the Servants of Suffering: Suffering is a great grace; through suffering the soul becomes like the Savior; in suffering love becomes crystalized: the greater the suffering, the purer the love (Dairy, 57).
The Servants are a group of religious and lay persons (associates) who desire to live a life of greater sacrifice than most. It is a call to live beyond self, to be in the world, but not of it. For the religious, it is a life of sacrifice lived by the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. For the lay person, it is the promise to live the life of chastity, poverty and obedience, according to their state in life. Some associates, if they wish, take a vow of Chasity with the promise to Christ never to marry.
The Secular Institute Servants of Suffering was founded December 25, 1993 by diocesan priest Fr. Pierino Galeone who wanted to help others follow the spirituality of St. Padre Pio, to "complete what is lacking in Christ's afflictions" and offer suffering to sanctify others. The Association Servants of Suffering is a private organization that follows the spirituality of the Servants of Suffering. Information for both is listed below. Their website is: https://www.servantsofsuffering.com
